For those who own any vl or car with an exhaust watch out. The EPA are now checking to see how loud ya car is. The limit is 90db at i think 4500rpm, any louder and you get fined and have to do something bout it.
They did a test on abrand new commodore, stock as a rock......ran it to 4500 and it wasnt over 90db, so they pull there foot of the accelorator and tromp it down again which makes the noise 4-6db over the 90db limit. Therefor they can screw you over anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dunno if they can do it legally to "tromp" the accelorator, but they can and will to get you..........

My dad has a decibel meter and i tested mine it is just over and it only has a sports exhaust, my brother has extractors on his gemi and he was WAY over!!! just another way they can fine you for something stupid!! i just want to know how many guys out there have been fined from EPA for there intercoolers not complying with emmision laws???

I recon if mine was tested at 4500rpm, it would pass. But this is only because it wouldnt be under boost..... completely different story then!

yer sorry im gunna speak my minde here cos two things piss me off is the noise law and exhaust law.......
when a harley is produced thay are way over the 90db rateing, so why dont they all go and book bikies? What are they affraid or are they just wanting revenue???? what about mineing equipment? does that mean that there all in for it aswell? I mean a coal truck is pretty loud when its loaded, how many of them are eva gunna get done?!?! I agree some dudes who drive wog boxes with 4"zorsts and rev the **** outta em, so yer book em, but do it cos YOU seen em doing it......dont book the ones who arent.....
also if your stero is to loud in an commercial/industrial area then book them as well, but hey why dont you ever book people at parties for noise being to loud, only a warning is given to calm down theparty and noise, no fine!? Or tieing in with the epa harleys are loud why not book them? I think revenue is the main factor here as well as quotos....so how much is made and where does all go to? The car culture is very much an easy target here........
sorry but these things are targeting young cultures such as ours......hey what about ppl who live near an airport? Its loud so why not do sumfin bout that???
Sorry but it pisses me off!!!!!!!!

Different levels of noise are applicable for different vehicles (obviously)

If there is a loud party near you and the culprits aren't being fined, then complain LOUDER!! 8O
I have had a party cop $100 fines once an hour for every hour that they were keeping me awake.
You just have to be vigilant and get the message across!!
Sleep is too important to go without...and if I have to miss out on sleep, then I want somebody to PAY! ops:

Jet Calais: Turbo cars quiten down on their exhaust note once they hit boost and start to spool
These ****s have tested me, and yer the first time they tested it with not much load on the engine and it went from 106dB and then dropped to 91dB when the turbo started to spool..
The second time they hit with much more load, and it scramed its head off even once boost kiked in, they know wat theyre doing the tight ****s, and if they want 2 **** u, they will..
Seriously u hear of people passing their exhaust dB, by getting let off for 2dB, i rock up in a yellow vl, and they give me nothing but ****, and fail me for the the reader, which goes up by 2's, flickering on 92dB, tossers...

More rash statements that basically read " why don't they go and book someone else and not me"
"Build a bridge and get over it"
What makes you think that they don't go after Harleys?
I'm very pleased to say that the cops do go after Harleys 'big time'
Information on groups of bikers is even passed on from Police patrol to the nest patrol as they are riding. You would be amazed what is done about them if you actually knew

23-07-02, 10:13 GMT+10#10 I got done for having an exhaust that is too loud. There are different limits for different cars, bikes etc. Coz my car is so old the limit is 96db I think. I got a letter in the mail saying that a cop had reported my car as being too loud so I had to take it in to get tested. You can get it tested at any of the registered test places - usually exhaust shops.
My test was done by a guy at a local exhaust shop and he was really good - I ended up being about 3db over the limit which doesnt sound like much but db's use a logorithmic scale so its almost twice as loud as whats allowed!! 8O
He said he could fit a resonator for me and it should bring it down, but seeing as though I'm currently building a new engine I said I'd sort it myself and bring it back. He was fine with that (didnt charge for the test). I then proceeded to de-tune the engine and quieten down the exhaust via some 'special' modifications and took it back. It was still just slightly over the limit but he passed me anyhow.
So basically the cops had nothing to do with the testing of the exhaust besides reporting me in the first place - which they did without me even knowing until I received the letter. The testing guy was just an exhaust shop guy who couldnt rally give a **** about how loud it is he was just doing his job and was actually into modified cars himself.
The testing regulation say that it has to be tested @ steady 3000rpm so stomping on it and getting a reading is incorrect, it has to be held at 3000rpm and the meter takes a couple of seconds anyhow to get an accurate reading without the needle jumping all over the place. I cant see how you can get an accurate reading @ 3000rpm when the revs are jumping up and down.

23-07-02, 13:31 GMT+10#11 I thought it was 3000rpm..... and not 4500rpm.
If COONS (XD,XE and XF falcons 4.1) got tested at 4500rpm they would throw a leg outa bed!!!!

23-07-02, 20:20 GMT+10#13 Chicken wire loosely roled into a sausage and poked into your exhaust works wonders for sound deadening..and when you are done, just dig it out.

24-07-02, 16:29 GMT+10#16 Cause it's cheaper and easiet to stuff chicken wire down your tailpipe than it is to get new mufflers to pass a pit inspection!
